All not always fun and games at the pond

Turns out Monday was a practice run for the coldest weather of the season which is expected on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.  When I got up our thermometer said it was 11 degrees.  I washed my face, brushed my teeth and when out to take care of the chickens and ducks.  I got as far into my routine as turning on the hose at the spigot when I hit a snag.  No water.  I thought the hose was frozen so I went inside to the kitchen sink to get water and no water there either.

We remained without water until about noon.  We had to make two runs over to my in-laws to get water for the chickens and our coffee.  Frank insisted that the cause of the problem was that I left the hose connected to the outside spigot.  I always drain the hose the night before but apparently that is not enough.  So we added a Rural King run to our list of to do items for the day.  Buy a hose that Kim can attach and unattached from the spigot easily.

Next Mike noticed that Little Girl is hogging the electric heating dog pad in the garage.  So to make Buddy more comfortable he hooked up a space heater near the dog houses in the garage.  How come my poultry doesn't get this type of preferential treatment?

Buddy got the electric heating pad back from Little Girl and he is enjoying the heat from the space heater.
Mike and I were about to head to the store when I noticed water under the kitchen sink.  Turns out we had a water drip.  This is the second time Mike has had to fix this and this time the leak was in a different place.  Now we added pluming supplies to the shopping list.

I am so looking forward to Wednesday morning when the temperature is 5 degrees.  Hopefully we will have water and the chickens will have survived the cold even without their very own space heater.
