Traffic Jam in the Chicken Coop

We have one chicken nest in the chicken coop.  One chicken nest means that the three chickens will have to share it but that is not the problem.  The problem is that none of the chickens like to use the nest.

We have two duck beds in the chicken coop because we have two ducks.  They are actually kitty litter boxes that I have filled with pine shavings and placed on the floor.  The ducks do not sleep in the duck beds.  They prefer to sleep directly on the ground.  They use the duck bed that is furthest in the corner to lay eggs.  And that is where all three of my chickens lay their eggs.

I bet you can tell where this is going.  The traffic jam occurs at the one and only place everyone of my five poultry want to lay their eggs.  Both ducks must have wanted to use the nest at the same time this morning because I found one egg in the nest and one laying right next to it.  Then later in the day I found my hens, Marion and Winifred, fighting over it.

Marion was so overwrought that she was squawking like crazy and prancing all over the chicken coop.  Winifred was in the nest.  When Winifred wouldn't move, Marion tried to settle on the poop tray and create a nest there.  I was so distraught I convinced Winifred to move off the nest.  Lo and behold, she was sitting on two eggs - hers and Ellen's.  Once she left the coop in a huff, Marion settled on the nest.  When I returned later, Marion was eating outside and Winifred was sitting on the nest again.  Guess who's egg she was sitting on this time.  Yep, Marion's.

Today we set a record in egg production.
First time I have ever found 5 eggs in the coop.
How many white? brown? blue?
The larger ones are duck eggs.

ANSWERS:  There are two white eggs which are the duck eggs.
There is one blue chicken egg from Winifred.
Can you tell that there are two different color brown eggs?  Mike can't.
The darker brown egg is Marion's.  The lighter brown egg is Ellen's.
