All is Calm....

...once again in the chicken house.  That is because the rooster no longer lives there.  We had to remove him because he was attacking the chickens.  In fact we lost one of the chickens.

Both Mike and I have noticed quite a change in the coop now that the rooster is gone.  When I go into the coop in the mornings I no longer find feathers everywhere.  Also there has been much more activity in the nest area.  By the time I finish my chores, three out of the four nests are occupied.

Seeing the nests filled with chickens was very encouraging.  For the past month, we have been lucky if we collected one egg every other day.  Sure enough the first day after the rooster left I found two eggs.

But the next day was even better.  I only found one egg but it was a very small egg.  Mike concurred.  This meant that one of our new chicks was finally laying eggs.  It should be just a matter of time before the other four start too.

However, I was convinced that living rooster-less was a good thing when Mike came in from the chicken coop today with three eggs!  And one was smaller than the others so looks like our baby chicken has progressed to full egg production.

At least for me, it has become a lot more fun to go out to the chicken coop.  I never know what I will find.  Maybe tomorrow I will find more than three eggs and in colors other than brown.  I'm looking for white and bluegreen eggs that will be from the newest chickens when they become layers.

In the meantime, I will just enjoy the calm.
