Farming

It was a very wet spring and as a result we did not get any corn planted in our fields.  By the time the fields were dry, the time to plant corn had passed.  So our farmer decided to plant soy beans for the second year in a row.  Usually he alternates the two crops from year to year.

To save time, our farmer also did not disk the field.  Instead he planted the new soy bean seeds right in among the stubble from last years crop.  Of course, he first sprayed weed killer on the field.

He did this right before Sela and Eli came in June.  We spent their vacation looking for signs that the soy beans were actually going to grow among the stubble.  Sure enough, they were finally tall enough to see and then finally tall enough to spot the rows.

Mike is really pleased that we are growing soy beans on our ground again.  He says we get a higher crop yield from soy beans than from corn.  In other words, our ground is better at producing soy beans than corn.  I find this hard to believe.  So now I am waiting until fall to find out which of us is right.   Once the crop is out we will have to check current year results to previous years to find the truth.
