June Celebrations

Suzanne, Heath and Laura joined Mike and I this past weekend at the pond.  We decided to get together to celebrate my birthday and Father's Day.  The original idea was to have a celebration meal Saturday at lunch but since everyone was actually together at the pond on Friday night, we decided to open presents while cooking s'more's over the backyard fire pit. 

Father-to-be Heath received the most presents.  His wife bought him a new t-shirt and cap but he also received many gifts to share with his baby-to-be.  Suzanne and Heath have decided to decorate the baby's room in a Toy Story theme with blue walls that have white clouds painted on them and shelves for baby toys.  Heath opened a Toy Story backpack full of stuffed figures to put on to these shelves.  He also found several baby footie pajamas among his presents.  These pajamas were also Toy Story themed. 

Mike received Father's Day presents as well.  He received several lures, another pair of water shoes and safety sunglasses because it is important to have back ups of items he uses so often.  I received a bread scoring knife slashing razor blade tool called a lame by professional bakers.  I used it the very next day and it works great.  I also have a proofing bowl which I will use the next time I bake my artisan loaves to give them a round shape with spiral markings on the crust.  I also received a dachshund glass wind chime.  

The next day we had our special occasion lunch.  Heath made shrimp kabobs and Suzanne taught me how to bake a pie.  I especially wanted to learn how to make a tasty crust that looks attractive but still holds its shape when cut.  Suzanne walked me through the pie crust making steps.  Then she made a mixed berry filling and created the lattice work on the pie.  I can't remember the last time I enjoyed learning a new skill so much.  It may have something to do with getting to eat a delicious final product.  

We were so impressed with our meal preparations that we invited Grandma Lois to join us.  It turned out to be a great weekend to spend time as a family.  Now I cannot wait until next month when our California family member Emily can visit and we can have the whole family together again.
