Emily gave Mike a wren bird house for Christmas. He and Emily hung it yesterday. I did some research to see what we are getting into with wrens. Wrens arrive about April 10th through the 20th. They have two to three broods per year so ideally we should have two to three wren houses since they seldom build second or third nests in the same house in the same year. Mama Wren can lay six to eight eggs per family. Incubation is about 15 days and their age to first flight is another 15 days.
If we want to entice house wrens to live here we should have positioned the house in areas with trees and shrubs. If we want to have Bewick wrens we would want more open countryside and farmsteads.
To keep all in readiness for our wrens we should keep vacant houses free of paper wasps and ants. *
