Year of the Corn

Our new farmers, the Blankenship's, planted our farm fields this last weekend.  In past years, our six fields were split between corn and soybeans but this year all of our fields were planted with a hybrid corn seed.   The Blankenship's also planted all corn in Frank and Lois's fields.

The good news is that our farmer farms a lot of ground including his own.  Because of this he has very large and efficient planting equipment.  When we go out to look at our fields, we can see how he has used every bit of the field right up to the tree line and that the rows are very close together.  This means we will get a higher corn yield from our field than in previous years.

Part of the Blankenship Farm Operation
They are so big they just acquired their own fire truck.
We just wonder why they need a fire truck.
The not so good news is that for some reason our fields do not produce the greatest of corn crops.  We know this because in previous years we have compared our crops to Frank and Lois's crops.  See the picture below.  These corn cobs were picked several years ago.  The corn cob on the left is from Frank and Lois's fields.  The corn cob on the right is from our field.

Anyway, assuming the weather cooperates and we don't have a drought as has been predicted, we will remain optimistic that this year our fields will yield more corn than in previous years.  Whether our corn yield will be as great as Frank and Lois's will be the question.
