Exploring the Timber

I have changed since I moved from the city to the country.  Since leaving Houston and coming to the pond, I have become a vegetable gardener and a chicken farmer.  But I am still not much of an outdoors person.

However, I am working on it.  My latest attempt at spending more time in the great outdoors involves hiking through the timber.  I walk for exercise every day but usually I walk on the roads.  It is less muddy and has less bugs then traipsing thru the timber.  To entice me back to exploring my own property, Mike has created a new walking path on our property.  It goes next to the Y where the pond is fed from some springs.

Creating this path has been a time consuming process.  Mike has had to cut down small trees and remove briars.  At places where large trees have fallen, he has had to get out the chain saw and the new timber jack and chop them into smaller pieces to move them out of the way.

Unfortunately, the resulting path in the woods was still not good enough for me.  I couldn't find my way home.  One tree looks like another one to me.  So Mike went to Buchheit's and bought flagging tape for the woods.  Now when I hike I am to look for the orange tape tied to the trees.

Today was the first test run with the new tape.  It worked great.  I felt empowered.  Now I know what Lewis and Clark felt like.

Lewis and Clark even had a dog with them too- Seaman, a newfoundland.  Of course I have them beat.  When I explore I have five dogs with me.
