Mike's Idea

Mike had the electricians trench electric wire from Morton Building Number 2 (MB2) through the bean field and down to the pond.  He wanted to install an aeration system.  The pond and the fish in the pond will benefit from an aeration system.

Aerators add oxygen to the pond water.  The increased oxygen and circulation promote beneficial aerobic bacteria which helps prevent muck and maintains clear water.  Since fish need oxygen too, the addition of an aerator ensures that there will always be enough oxygen in the water to keep them alive and well.

The aerator is made up of a cabinet with a compressor, fan and manifold that is installed on land and then the weighted diffusers that go in the water.  We have four of those.  They are connected back to the cabinet with air hoses.  Mike also connected a duck decoy to each of the four diffusers in case we ever had to pull them back out of the pond.  So it is easy to spot the aeration action in our pond.  I look for the bubbles in the water near the four duck decoys.

Mike and I were concerned that the addition of the duck decoys would upset our geese residents.  I am happy to say this has not been a problem.  Apparently it is quite obvious to them that those ducks are not real.  So, at least so far, the reviews for the addition of the aerator have all been positive.
