Fourth of July
Even though Laura came to visit us for this holiday, it was still a relatively quiet day especially compared to the previous few years. Emily usually invited a bunch of college friends for the weekend but they have all moved on from the college years now and haven't time to get away. And last year Sela and Eli were visiting too but they have plans to come up later this summer so it was just Mike. Laura and I.
Even though I did not need to have my marathon cooking session to get ready for a fourth of July with only four people (Mike's mom Lois was having dinner with us), I was not prepared to give up my favorite foods. So I made my popular white bean caprese salad and deviled eggs. Mike fried up red potatoes and grilled the meat. And I made my special dessert.
We did have a few people drop in to visit which broke up our quiet day. Relatives of Mike's aunt came to go fishing. We, of course, were under another heat advisory so mom and the two kids were getting pretty hot and bored out there. Mike got the kids to come inside and play in the basement. Dad and Grandma had a great time fishing though.
Then Allison came by to work on her 4H project. She had started it the day before but had so much fun she wanted to come back and finish. She sewed two 16 inch pillows for her bed. She did all the sewing. I just helped with the cutting and ironing.
We concluded the day on a high note. We had a movie showing of the classic Yankee Doodle Dandy with James Cagney.
