Efficiency
After three years of mowing our grass, Mike has decided that there has to be ways to cut his weekly mowing time and yet have our yard look like a 'golf course'. So the first thing he did was to finally take his dad's suggestion and spray weed killer along places that he would normally trim. Once that was effective, his goal was to replace the dead weeds with white rock.
Of course, like most of our great ideas, this plan was not as simple or fast to implement as it is to describe. First, it took awhile for the weed killer to work. It is not fast acting. Once it did however, we realized we needed to get the rock. While I was gone visiting Kathy in Las Vegas, Mike ordered rock and had it delivered. As soon as he saw the rock pile, he realized we had a new problem. We now had too much rock. We were going to have to come up with a new plant to use it all up.
So Mike got to work putting rock around the chicken coop because now with only dead weeds there it because a muddy mess when it rained. He could not just put down rock. No, he had to create a sloop so water would run away from the chicken coop.
Then he put black garden fabric down so no new weeds would grow through the rock.
Then he used the tractor to bring some rock over closer to the shed. From the tractor, he used a bucket to pour the rock and then he had to smooth it out.
Finally he was finished. It works great. He does not get muddy when taking care of the chickens, it looks really nice, and he no longer has to weed whip the entire area.
The only problem. It sure looks like the rock pile has not diminished at all.
