Halloween Creativity
This time of year must bring out my creative side. So far I have made spider cookies, found Halloween costumes for Mike, Frankie the Basset Hound, and myself, decorated a car trunk, made a pumpkin table runner, and decorated pumpkins with crayons and a blow dryer.
While I was visiting my nephews, Eli and Jackson, Eli and I decorated peanut butter blossom cookies to look like spiders. The idea was from Pinterest but the execution was mine and Eli's. He handled the head and eyes. I handled the legs. An impromptu survey upon completion of our project resulted in no votes for 'looks like spiders'. We had 'looks like a crab' and 'looks like a monster.' Anyway, they tasted good.
I had better luck with my making a new fall table runner. My old one is so old it has faded. I remember making it when Emily was 5. The new one is longer than the old one and Mike grinds coffee beans on top of it. So I am not sure how long this will last either. At least, it is washable.
On Friday, Mike and I dressed up ourselves, one dog and our car trunk for Trunk or Treat at our church. Suzanne made our costumes from an Internet idea I had found. We were a hit. What happened is that the popcorn line got really long and it was right next to our car. So we always had a bunch of people waiting in line and staring at our costumes. It usually took them a few seconds to figure out what we were.
We could tell Frankie was not having a good time. For one thing he would only show his tail side to the trunk or treaters for most of the two hours. He seemed to be hiding from his adoring public. Besides we could tell by the look on his face that this topped his list of things that were beneath his dignity in which to participate.

Laura even dropped by to see how we were doing at the end of the evening and Frankie tried to leap into her arms. Nearly knocked her down. I do not think his greetings to Suzanne and Emily at the airport were ever half that effusive. Unfortunately for him, Laura did not rescue him and he had to remain a marshmallow for the entire Trunk or Treat event.
Then on Sunday for my children's Sunday School class we read a book about a pumpkin parable and decorated pumpkins with crayons and blow dryers. One of my students asked if he could just draw on two triangles and a mouth and be done but Laura and I strongly persuaded him to give the melted crayon look a try. He liked the finished results and Laura took the leftovers to do with her church children's group where they were a resounding success. Thank goodness for Pinterest!
