A Preview Spring Day
On Saturday, the temperatures climbed to 50 degrees and the sun came out. The weather was so fine Mike decided to tackle one of his outdoor chores. It also was a great excuse to use his new chain saw. He had only used it once before when he cut some new tree growth on the back of the dam at the pond.
Last spring, we had called a tree trimmer to give us an estimate on taking down a tree that was threatening our chickens and their coop. He gave us the estimate but never came back to do the work. Mike decided that he had waited long enough to get this tree removed. It was starting to worry him that his own life might be endangered when he was over at the coop feeding the chickens. The tree that concerned him had fallen as was leaning on a frail limb on a nearby tree. It looked like it was just a matter of time before disaster struck.
So while I was inside the house finishing up a quilt, Mike quietly set out to tackle that tree. In the meantime, Heath called Mike to say since it was such a nice day, he was bringing the two dogs up to get some exercise. This still did not deter Mike from his appointed task. He went ahead and tackled that tree by himself.
First he corralled the chickens into the safer side of the coop area. Then he dismantled the cage walls so they would not be broken if the tree fell on them. He did not dismantle the play structure that Heath had built us which turned out to be unfortunate. It did get hit by the falling tree. Fortunately the damage was not too extensive and tightening a few screws were the only repairs necessary.
Once Mike checked that chore off his list, he was able to enjoy the fine weather. He and Heath took all the dogs for a nice muddy walk through the timber.
Even the chickens were able to enjoy the day once they were no longer restricted on access to their play area and the loud noises stopped. Apparently, they did not hold any of these problems against us and even laid a few eggs.
Just another eventful day at the pond.
