Storm Damage

We had a storm come through the other night. It was very windy.  The next morning I noticed something odd about the chicken run.

A limb had fallen through the mesh we had strung across the top of the chicken run and into the run.  We were fortunate that it had happened at night as no chickens were hurt in the accident.  During the day this is a favorite hangout.

I tracked Mike down to handle this crisis.  I returned with him to record this event for the blog.

Once Mike removed the limb, we found that the roof netting had been knocked off the top of the run.  This netting is important as it keeps birds of prey like hawks from swooping in and making off with our egg layers.  It also keeps chickens from flying out.  We first learned we had to do this when we brought Winifred, our first Americauna home.  She was a full grown bird that Mr. Jackson had given us and she was very active.  We have kept a cover on the runs ever since.

Mike was able to quickly rehang the meshing using zip ties.  The chickens are once again protected from birds of prey although not apparently from falling limbs.
