The Butterfly House

Suzanne has her last spring break this week.  She is a college senior and will be graduating in a few months.  She flew into St. Louis this morning to spend a few days with her family.

While Laura was working, Mike, Emily, Suzanne and I spent time at the Butterfly House.  It was March Morpho Mania Time.  The tropical conservatory is filled with thousands of breathtaking Blue Morpho butterflies from tropical forests in Central America.

Things we learned:

1.  'the Blue Morpho's dazzling, metallic blue is all in the eye of the beholder: their wings are not actually colored blue, but are lined with many tiny scales that only allow blue light to escape.'  From the Butterfly House website.

2.  'during mating flights, male Blue Morphos rise high into the canopy, attracting mates with their iridescent splendor.'  Also from the Butterfly House website.

Look closely.  See butterflies on both girls heads.
3.  The underside of the morpho’s wings is a dull brown color with many eyespots.  This provides camouflage against predators when the wings are closed.

4.  Blue morpho's are large for butterflies.
