March to the Manger

relaxing before the
service
Mike and I were asked to play Mary and Joseph in our church's March to the Manger.  Basically, they use real people and costumes to recreate the Christmas manger scene.  This is done during a special Sunday Service with a narrator reading the Bible story and the choir interspersing the reading with appropriate songs.  That's all I can tell you about it because I was so well occupied during the service I pretty much missed hearing the reading and the songs.

The reason I missed hearing the specifics of the service was because of Isaac who played Baby Jesus. He is a five month old cutie and his mother directs the choir and his dad is a member of the choir which partially explains why the parts of Mary and Joseph were uncast until someone thought of us.  As Mike put it, we were closer in age to Sarah and Abraham than Mary and Joseph but I digress.

Isaac got the part because a) he was a baby, b) his mother coordinated the program c) he is a very social guy and d) he loves listening to the organ and hearing the choir sing.  Mike and I had a great time playing with him at practice.  Mike tried to convince his mom that we should take him home and practice some more but she didn't buy it.

Anyway, Mike and Isaac had a great time playing together before the service but once we got on stage Isaac's patience with the production began to wane.  As one of the congregation put it although we were good as Mary and Joseph but "Baby Jesus stole the show by singing along with the choir."
