Pond Level

Mike and I have become concerned about the level of water in our pond.  It is the lowest we have seen it since we moved here.  This is because we have had very little rain since the wedding two months ago.

But just this past week, we were hopeful of getting some rain.  There was rain in the weather forecast and we even had rain clouds.

Here is a picture of the pond after the two inches of rain we received last week.  The water circled is the water run off into the pond after the rain.  For those of you who were here for the wedding, the log in this picture was pretty much underwater at that time.  So we need a lot more than two inches of rain to fill up this pond.

It is not just rain that fills our pond but run off from all the fields that are in the area surrounding our pond.  Mike noticed the farmer on the ground next to our property leveling off his fields earlier this week.  This will benefit our pond as it should increase the run off from his field into our pond.  His lack of low ground wet spots will be our gain.

As the year draws to a close, Mike and I realize there will be another source of water for our pond beside rain and ground run off.  We will probably get snow.  That always helps our pond level rise by the spring.  Of course, we need a cold snowy winter for this to happen.  I am once again watching for the banded wooly worms when we walk.  Legend has it that the more black on the banded wooly worm the more severe the winter.  Unfortunately, this is the only banded wooly worm I have seen so far and there is not much black on it.  However, I just read about another legend concerning the banded wooly worm.

This legend states that if the banded wooly worm is heading south, get ready for a long cold winter.  If it is heading north, there will be a mild winter.  Tomorrow I plan on going on my walk with my compass at the ready.  Maybe I will be rewarded with evidence that finally foretells of a cold and snowy winter.  Because apparently, my pond needs one.
