Besides the traditional family Easter meal and attending church as a family, we also added back two of our other Easter traditions this year. We decorated eggs and we held an Easter basket (and morel mushroom) hunt.
We dyed hardboiled eggs this year in two ways. One was the usual vinegar and colored water baths and the second involved rolling eggs in foam with liquid dye added. Both were very successful even though the majority of the fresh farm eggs were brown to start with.
And then later in the day, the Easter bunny hid five Easter baskets. He told us that each Easter basket was to be found in the timber right next to a morel mushroom growing wild. Participants were to pick the mushroom and add it to their basket.
There was some fear that the Easter baskets would never be found as we have many acres of timber. So we decided to take the dogs with us. They were very helpful. I wonder if they can read.
Some of the baskets were more difficult to find than others because they were farther from the timber trail and so lightly colored they fit in with the scenery.
Of course, there are always one or two people who have to be over achievers. Both Laura and Heath were not happy with just one morel mushroom and an Easter basket. They had to keep hunting for mushrooms. The rest of us rested on the dock while they hunted in the timber.
Our Easter traditions were so popular I hope to do them again next year. however, there will be one change. Next year, the Easter baskets need to contain more Reese Eggs.
