There Once Was a Drone

Mike found a drone while we were shopping at Sam's Club that he though would be perfect for Sela and Eli to play with at the pond.  At least that was the plan.  It just did not work out quite that way.

Sela and Eli had been visiting for a few days when I reminded Mike that there was a drone stored in the basement.  Maybe he would like to get it out and show the kids how to play with it.  I then left to run some errands.  When I returned I noticed this in my driveway.

I asked Sela if she knew why there was a ladder against a tree.  She said Mike had flown the drone into the tree and had to use the ladder to get it down.  I asked the whereabouts of Mike and the drone and she was not sure.

I found Mike and the drone out in the yard.  I asked why he was in the yard with the drone and the kids were inside.  He indicated they had lost interest when the drone had flown into the tree the second time.  I asked why he was not flying the drone in a more open area and he said Sela had asked the same question.

So Mike and I moved to an open area.  Mike got the drone flying again and promptly had it heading away from any trees but over the pond.  I mentioned that he should possibly fly the drone in any other direction and he said he would if he could.

However, after a few moments Mike seemed to have the situation under control and even was able to land the drone.

To prove he had mastered the drone Mike had it lift off again.  This time however the landing did not occur anywhere near us.  It landed in the farmers bean field near Morton Building #2.  I decided to go get Eli to help Mike retrieve it.  That was the last I ever saw of the drone.

I pieced together what happened next from the stories Mike and Eli told me separately.  Mike and Eli did find the drone and flew it several more times.  Actually Eli flew it once when Mike's brother Bill and his young friend Aiden came on the scene.  They also got a chance to fly it.  Then Eli handed the remote controls over to Mike and Mike landed the drone back in the bean field where no one has been able to find it.  According to Mike, he never would have lost control of the drone if Eli had not handed him the remote upside down.  Eli said that never happened.

All of this took place on a Monday morning.  Sela never did get a chance to fly the drone and I now have a drawer full of drone replacement parts, an instruction book, and flying controls but no drone.  I have learned my lesson.  I think if I ever buy a drone for Sela and Eli again, I will just make sure not to tell Mike anything about it.
